The DFW Car & Toy Museum has announced the addition of a 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300SD to the Ron Sturgeon Collection, housed in Fort Worth, Texas. This vehicle is historically significant as the world's first production turbocharged diesel sedan, a model that combined efficiency with executive-level comfort and redefined expectations for luxury cars.
The 300SD, originally finished in Astral Silver Metallic, was repainted in the early 2000s and now features subtle European-spec touches including quad headlights and streamlined bumpers. Additional exterior amenities include a sunroof, dual side mirrors, and a power antenna. The pitting chrome on the right-front door handle offers a glimpse into the car's well-traveled history.
Under the hood, the 3.0-liter OM617A turbo diesel inline-five engine produces 110 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is renowned for its bulletproof durability and helped usher in an era where diesel engines were no longer confined to trucks or taxis. With over 212,000 miles on the odometer, this vehicle exemplifies the reliability of the 300SD's engineering.
The car's suspension has been upgraded with Bilstein shock absorbers, and braking is handled by power-assisted ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes. Inside, classic amenities include a Becker Grand Prix stereo, automatic climate control, cruise control, power locks and windows, and a mix of analog instrumentation and ergonomic German design.
