BioLumic Brings Light-Activated Seed Trait Platform to South America

BioLumic, an agricultural biotechnology company that programs heritable seed traits using light, today announced the expansion of its Corn xTraits™ Licensing Program into South America. The initiative includes early-stage evaluations with GDM and a collaboration with Tropical Melhoramento & Genética (TMG), two of Brazil’s leading seed companies, along with regional seed production and nursery engagement with Gro Alliance. This move builds on strong partnership and commercial momentum of xTraits in the United States and follows BioLumic’s plan to create xTraits hubs in grain-producing regions worldwide.

The expansion into South America marks a significant step for BioLumic’s technology, which uses light signaling to unlock non-GMO genetic expression traits that enhance yield, composition, and crop resilience. The company’s patented xTraits technology applies a one-time, light-based seed treatment that is scalable and easily integrated into existing seed systems. By partnering with GDM, TMG, and Gro Alliance, BioLumic aims to adapt its platform to local genetics and growing conditions, creating a direct pathway to validate xTraits for farmers in the region.

Key to the expansion are multi-location field evaluations conducted by GDM, TMG, and major grower Grupo Scheffer. These trials will assess how BioLumic’s light-activated seed traits perform within local genetics and under regional environmental conditions. The results will inform commercial launch plans, with year-round nursery work in Chile and upcoming field trials in Brazil scheduled for 2026–2027. Broader Latin America rollout is expected within 12–15 months, with future expansion into soybean and ryegrass.

“We are excited to bring our xTraits technology to South America, a key agricultural region where farmers are looking for innovative solutions to boost productivity sustainably,” said a BioLumic spokesperson. The company’s partnerships with leading seed companies and growers provide a strong foundation for regional testing and validation. For more information, visit BioLumic’s website.

The move underscores BioLumic’s commitment to expanding its platform globally. With the U.S. market already showing strong adoption, the South American expansion represents a critical step toward establishing xTraits hubs in major grain-producing regions. The technology’s non-GMO approach and ability to enhance traits across multiple crops position it as a versatile tool for modern agriculture.
