The Broward Education Foundation announced the induction of six sports legends and five championship teams into the 2025 Broward County Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 16, at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, beginning with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and presentations. Steve Shapiro, former WSVN sports anchor and 2024 Hall of Fame inductee, will host the event.
The 2025 inductees include Isaac Bruce, a Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver who played 16 NFL seasons, primarily with the St. Louis Rams. Bruce, a Dillard High School graduate, is renowned for his precise route-running and clutch performances, including a 73-yard touchdown catch in Super Bowl XXXIV. He also founded the Isaac Bruce Foundation to promote youth health and education.
Isaac Diaz, a professional saddle bronc rider from Davie, has earned over $1.5 million in career earnings and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seven times. A three-time state high school champion, he won a collegiate national title at Tarleton State University and continues to compete at a high level.
Dr. Daniel Kanell, a sports medicine physician, served as team doctor for the Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, and other major league teams. After overcoming a major injury in high school, he became a track and field star and Scholar Athlete at the University of Pittsburgh before earning his medical degree. He helped launch the Broward County School Board Sports Medicine Program.
Kathryn Sallade, a Fort Lauderdale High School alumna, is a celebrated Deaflympian who won five gold medals and set five world records in backstroke. She was the first American female athlete to carry the U.S. flag at an opening ceremony and later coached U.S. Deaflympics teams. She was inducted into the Gallaudet University Sports Hall of Fame.
Scot Shields, a 1993 Fort Lauderdale High School graduate, carved out a 10-year MLB career as a setup pitcher for the Anaheim Angels, contributing to the 2002 World Series Championship. Sports Illustrated named him "Set-Up Man of the Decade" for the 2000s, and he holds the Angels' all-time record for holds (155).
Steve Strand has been a fixture at St. Thomas Aquinas High School for over four decades as a player, coach, and mentor. Under his leadership as head boys' basketball coach from 1996 to 2019, the team earned nine district championships and its first state title in 2001. His career record stands at 397-186.
The Cardinal Gibbons High School women's volleyball teams from 1975 to 1979 will also be inducted as a group, having won five consecutive FHSAA 4A state championships under legendary coach Louise A. Crocco. This dynasty helped shape women's athletics following Title IX and inspired a generation of athletes.
