Debut Southern Novel 'Chance: Beginning' Hits Amazon Best Sellers List

Roberts Essex's debut novel, "Chance: Beginning," has achieved a spot on Amazon's Best Sellers eBook List, marking a significant milestone for the first volume of a planned trilogy. The book, published in 2025, follows Chance Brogdon from his rural Georgia upbringing through the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and Watergate, set against the backdrop of mid-century Southern life.

Essex, a Georgia-based author writing under a pseudonym, describes the novel as semi-autobiographical. "This story was written for the lonely child, for the man who carries his pain in silence, and for anyone who fears that the past defines the future," he said. "I wanted to show that healing is real and that no one is bound by their wounds." The narrative weaves together themes of grief, trauma, addiction, racism, and violence, balanced by humor and the Southern storytelling tradition.

The novel's setting spans from the Kennedy to Carter administrations, incorporating historical touchpoints like the Mercury 7 space program, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the cultural shifts brought by rock 'n' roll and the British Invasion. Essex noted that writing the book became a way of confronting personal ghosts. "I hope the book inspires others through the trials and tribulations of one man's life, showing that anything is possible with enough optimism and belief," he added.

"Chance: Beginning" is available through major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and Walmart. Future installments, titled "Chance: The Search" and "Chance: A New Life," will continue Brogdon's story into later decades, addressing themes of survival, redemption, and faith. Essex has indicated that subsequent volumes will explore his son's abduction and its aftermath.

The book's ascent to the best sellers list underscores a growing interest in narratives that tackle complex historical and personal issues through a distinctly Southern lens. For readers seeking a story that balances pain with hope, "Chance: Beginning" offers a compelling entry point into a multi-volume saga.
