ARLINGTON, TX — Brandy Austin Law Firm has awarded its annual scholarship to Derrick Kagwanja, recognizing his commitment to social justice and academic excellence. Kagwanja was chosen from hundreds of applicants for the $1,000 scholarship, which aims to support law students dedicated to advocating for vulnerable populations.
The selection committee highlighted Kagwanja's deep engagement with contemporary legal issues, including his analysis of the Supreme Court case Grants Pass v. Johnson, which addressed whether cities can punish individuals for sleeping in public spaces when no alternative shelter is available. His understanding of this complex ruling demonstrated his ability to grapple with pressing legal questions affecting homeless populations.
Beyond academics, Kagwanja has extensive volunteer experience focused on at-risk youth. In high school, he volunteered with a free lunch summer program for inner-city youth in Kansas City. During college at Rice University, he worked at an elementary school, helping young boys appreciate education through interactive science experiments, speaking sessions, and outdoor play. These experiences solidified his vision to use legal education to serve underrepresented communities.
Kagwanja recently graduated from Rice University with a 3.67 GPA and intends to attend law school. Brandy Austin Law Firm anticipates great success from him and looks forward to seeing the impact he will make on the lives of the underserved.
