Florida's roadways are set to become safer thanks to a new law that imposes stringent penalties on excessive speeders. Effective July 1, 2025, the legislation targets drivers traveling 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit, or those driving 100 mph or more regardless of the limit. First-time offenders face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Second offenses carry up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. A third violation within five years can result in a license suspension of up to a year, alongside longer jail sentences and higher fines.
The law aims to improve safety on Florida highways and reduce fatalities and grievous injuries from high-speed collisions. According to data from the Florida Highway Patrol, from 2017 to 2023, 123 citations were issued to drivers going 50 mph or more over the limit. During that period, over 16,000 serious traffic accidents were caused by excessive speeding, resulting in more than 170 fatalities and nearly 500 severe injuries.
Lieutenant Indiana Miranda of the FHP noted that most citations for driving 100 mph or more occur overnight. "We have a couple of midnight units that enforce just traffic and speed with their lasers, and I do get the notifications that they have stopped people going 50 over, or driving at 120," Miranda said. The law also allows officers discretion based on conditions and traffic volume at the time of the violation.
