Hong Kong Wine & Spirits Fair Opens with New 'World of Spirits' Zone Amid Duty Cut

The 17th Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), opened today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, running from November 6 to 8. This year's event features over 620 exhibitors from 23 countries and regions, including the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and participants from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. With 18 pavilions, the fair underscores Hong Kong's position as a regional hub for the wine and spirits trade.

A significant development this year is the introduction of the 'World of Spirits' zone, which debuts following the Chief Executive's announcement of a reduced liquor duty in last year's Policy Address. This zone showcases spirits from 14 countries and regions, with a strong emphasis on Chinese baijiu and local Hong Kong brands. Notably, six of the 'Top 10 Chinese Baijiu Brands' are exhibiting, including Kweichow Moutai, Jiangsu Yanghe, Wuliangye, Luzhou Laojiao, Jiannanchun, and Langjiu from Sichuan. Also featured are Hongjiaban Baijiu, founded by Hong Kong actor Timmy Hung, and Kowloon Distillery, Hong Kong's first local whiskey brand.

The fair includes over 40 events and conferences, with 20 focused on spirits, reflecting the market's diversification. Highlights include the 'Originate from China • Sail to the World 2025 China Baijiu Culture International Promotion Asia Forum' and a Tasmanian Whisky & Spirits Master Class. Masters of Wine Debra Meiburg, Jennifer Docherty, and Xing Wei will host key sessions, offering insights into market trends. Xing Wei, Asia's youngest Master of Wine, joins award-winning sommeliers Carlito Chiu and Calvin Choi in a blind tasting event to select favorite wines and spirits, which will be marked with special labels at the fair.

The final day, November 8, opens to ticket-holding members of the public aged 18 or above for the Wine Fiesta zone, where attendees can sample and purchase wine and spirits. Activities include a Baijiu 101 Class, an Austrian Wine and Local Sauce Pairing Workshop, and a Mixology Party featuring bartenders from bars listed in the 'Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025'. This public access broadens the fair's reach, promoting consumer engagement with the spirits industry.

The implications of this announcement are multifaceted. The reduced liquor duty and the new 'World of Spirits' zone signal Hong Kong's strategic push to strengthen its status as a global wine and spirits trading hub, particularly for Chinese baijiu, which is gaining international recognition. The fair provides a platform for industry professionals and the public to explore emerging trends, such as low- and non-alcoholic beverages, and fosters business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises. The inclusion of public tasting days also aims to stimulate local consumption and tourism, aligning with broader economic revitalization efforts.
