He earned his Juris Doctor from Chicago-Kent College of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois, and he received the American Jurisprudence Award in Insurance Law. Appelbaum has also published articles on tort law and construction negligence and is an active member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, and the Lake County Bar Association.
Beyond his legal work, Appelbaum is recognized for his community involvement. He resides in Vernon Hills with his wife, Debbie, and has organized community pickleball tournaments through the Vernon Hills Park District to raise funds for the Family Scholarship Fund, which supports recreational opportunities for underprivileged children and families. In 2024, he received the Vernon Hills Park District Community Service Award for his efforts.
