Maryland Health Officials Issue Their Own Vaccine Recommendations Amid Federal Guidance Changes

The Maryland Department of Health has issued its own vaccination recommendations for the fall, urging all adults to receive their Covid-19 shot and recommending the vaccine for children aged 6 months to 2 years, as well as at-risk children aged 2 to 18 years. This move comes as the state health officials decide to diverge from the federal standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The announcement highlights Maryland's proactive approach to public health amid ongoing pandemic concerns.

In other state news, Maryland lawmakers are pushing to keep the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center open. The 115-year-old facility, which has seen multimillion-dollar investments, is under threat of closure with plans to move personnel to other states. Lawmakers including U.S. Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks, Reps. Steny Hoyer, Jamie Raskin, and Glenn Ivey, along with Prince George's County Executive Aisha Braveboy, gathered to emphasize the center's importance. Rep. Ivey stated, "There's been a multimillion-dollar investment in this space, and if you just pick it up and move it, you're squandering that money. It's expensive to move, and you'd have to build new facilities wherever you go. And you're going to lose the human capital."

Maryland residents can also expect a roughly $40 rebate on their electricity bills this month, as approved by the General Assembly in April, with a second round expected in early 2026. Meanwhile, Maryland's top federal prosecutor, Kelly O. Hayes, a Trump appointee, is overseeing investigations of at least two Trump critics: U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and former national security adviser John Bolton, though no charges have been filed yet.

The state's annual report on the Hospital Patient Safety Program showed a 5% increase in medical mistakes in fiscal 2023, with 49 deaths among 808 serious incidents. The report's data takes more than two years to assemble, raising questions about timeliness. Additionally, Maryland Democrats are focusing on affordability to sell the potential federal shutdown to constituents, as the federal government holds outsized influence in the state, housing agencies like the FDA, NSA, and NOAA.

Other notable stories include the Green Party's nomination of Andy Ellis for governor, a push to restore a "secret cemetery" for Black boys at a former juvenile detention facility, and Montgomery County's celebration of African Heritage Month. A highway marker now honors the five staff members of the Capital Gazette who were killed in 2018, reminding motorists of the dangers journalists face. The marker was unveiled by families and officials, with Andrea Chamblee, widow of John McNamara, expressing hope that it reminds people not to take the truth for granted.
