Eric Desaulniers, founder, president and CEO of Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. (NYSE: NMG), recently appeared on Benzinga All Access to discuss the company's role in addressing the global demand for graphite and reducing reliance on China. NMG, a North American mining company based in Quebec, Canada, aims to be the first fully integrated, carbon-neutral producer of graphite, supporting growth in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics.
Desaulniers highlighted that China currently produces all the graphite used for electric batteries, a situation he described as unsustainable. "Obviously that is unsustainable, and people need to find an alternative," he said, noting that NMG operates the only graphite mining project in the G7. While NMG sells graphite concentrate, the company is also focused on transforming it into active anode material—the processed, purified form of graphite used in batteries. "You don’t want your concentrate to leave for China and be processed there into valuable products," Desaulniers added.
When asked about potential attention from the current administration, Desaulniers declined to comment but emphasized graphite's importance to the U.S. economy, not just in batteries but also in defense and other applications. The full interview is available at YouTube.
