American Heart Association's Support Network Offers Lifeline for Heart and Stroke Survivors

The American Heart Association is drawing attention to the often-overlooked emotional and social dimensions of recovery from heart disease and stroke with its Support Network, a free online community that connects patients, survivors, and caregivers. The timing coincides with National Family Caregivers Month in November, a period dedicated to recognizing the importance of connection and community for those affected by cardiovascular events, including individuals caring for a loved one.

Heart disease and stroke can upend daily life in ways that are difficult to navigate alone. The Support Network addresses this gap by offering a space where members can share stories, ask questions, and exchange encouragement as their needs evolve. The platform is accessible around the clock, ensuring that support is available whenever it is needed.

For David Thomas, a heart attack survivor from Medford Lakes, New Jersey, the community has been transformative. “When I experienced multiple heart attacks, I quickly learned that recovery involves much more than healing physically. I needed connection with people who have experienced similar challenges,” Thomas said. “I found a community where I could share my story, ask questions and speak openly with people who understood the physical and emotional impact of a heart event. The compassion and encouragement helped me feel understood, supported and heard. No one should have to navigate recovery alone.”

Medical experts emphasize that emotional well-being is an integral part of overall health. “Caring for your health includes both your physical health and your overall well-being. Meaningful connections with people who understand what you’re going through can be an important source of support,” said Glenn Levine, M.D., American Heart Association volunteer and professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. “Whether someone is adjusting to a diagnosis, managing a health condition or caring for a loved one, connecting with others who share similar experiences can bring understanding, encouragement and a sense of belonging.”

The Association has recently expanded the Support Network with more personalized ways for members to find connection, support, and resources based on their health journey. Members can now connect one-on-one with people who share similar lived experiences or join discussions focused on heart and stroke topics. They can also discover virtual and in-person support groups, events, and educational opportunities tailored to different stages, whether newly diagnosed, recovering from a heart event or stroke, caring for a loved one, or managing a chronic condition over time. Additionally, the platform offers information and connections to additional support and social services that address immediate needs and broader well-being.

Healthcare professionals are encouraged to share the Support Network with patients, survivors, and caregivers seeking peer connection, emotional support, and trusted information beyond the clinical setting. For those navigating life after a heart attack or stroke, the Association provides dedicated resources such as Life After a Heart Attack and Life After Stroke. Caregivers can find guidance through Caregiver Support.

The implications of this initiative extend beyond individual well-being. By fostering a community where shared experience is valued, the Support Network helps reduce the isolation that often accompanies chronic illness and caregiving. It also complements clinical care by addressing the emotional and practical challenges that arise between doctor visits. As the Association notes, no one should have to navigate recovery alone, and the Support Network stands as a testament to the power of connection.
