The American Humane Society, the country's first national animal welfare organization, has announced the five finalists for the 15th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Selected from 25 courageous semi-finalists, these dogs represent five categories: service and guide/hearing dogs, emerging hero and shelter dogs, law enforcement and first responder dogs, military dogs, and therapy dogs. The awards celebrate the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs, recognizing canines that have made significant contributions to society.

The finalists include Donald, a guide dog from Fort Myers, Florida, who transformed the life of his veteran handler after she lost her central vision following 25 years of military service. Donald enables her to travel, host events, and even ski, while providing constant companionship at home. Lieutenant Dan, from New Richmond, Ohio, was born with a severe limb deformity and lost both hind legs and his tail, yet he inspires people of all abilities through his joyful spirit, hiking, swimming, and helping foster pets with special needs.
Harrison, Caldwell County's first electronics scent detection K-9 in North Carolina, is specially trained to locate hidden electronic devices, playing a critical role in digital evidence discovery for criminal investigations, particularly Internet Crimes Against Children cases. K9 Ultra, a Military Working Dog from Matawan, New Jersey, is a skilled detection dog who transitions seamlessly from mission mode to playful family pet. Finally, Sgt. Bo recently retired from the Metro Nashville Police Department, where he served as a therapy dog offering comfort to children and adults in schools, de-escalating crises, and providing unconditional care.
