International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to undertake a comprehensive modernization of the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube River. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a cornerstone of the nation's energy infrastructure, contributing approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity production. The project aims to refurbish and upgrade the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW, to ensure long-term reliable and sustainable electricity generation.
The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The scope of the modernization includes the gradual refurbishment of the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units to the latest technical standards. The primary objectives are to improve the plant's efficiency and availability while extending the technical service life of the key operating equipment by at least 30 years. The comprehensive scope of supply encompasses model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning, along with modernization of key turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems.
The modernization will be carried out sequentially to maintain availability during the upgrade process, minimizing any impact on ongoing operations.
