Arius Technology, a leader in ultra-high-resolution 3D scanning for fine art, has announced a partnership with the Municipality of Sansepolcro, Italy, to digitize the Renaissance fresco The Resurrection by Piero della Francesca. This project aims to create a precise digital record of the artwork, which is housed in the Museo Civico 'Piero della Francesca' and is considered one of Western art's greatest masterpieces.
The scanning process will use Arius's proprietary technology to capture surface texture and color at a resolution of 10 microns, producing detailed digital files known as ADMF™. These files will support conservation, research, and potential restoration efforts. According to Paul Lindahl, CEO of Arius Technology, the technology "captures the full dimensionality and detail of the original work, transporting it into the digital world to ensure its legacy lives on." The digital records can also be used for museum-grade reproductions and blockchain storage.
This collaboration marks a significant step for fresco preservation, as these works are particularly susceptible to environmental damage. Fabrizio Innocenti, Mayor of Sansepolcro, expressed pride in the partnership, stating it allows the town to "enhance our very important artistic and cultural heritage through the use of cutting-edge and futuristic technology." Art historian Luca Baroni noted that Sansepolcro is the first Italian municipality to adopt this technology, highlighting the role of local institutions in protecting cultural treasures.
The project is part of Arius Technology's broader initiative to work with cultural institutions globally, bridging art history and technology. The company, headquartered in Vancouver with offices in London and New York, originally developed its scanning system for the Mona Lisa. The digitization of The Resurrection underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations while making it accessible worldwide.
