BHP Forecasts Structural Copper Deficit from 2028, Signaling Major Supply Challenges

BHP Chief Financial Officer Vandita Pant has warned that the global copper market could face a structural supply deficit beginning in 2028, with the shortfall persisting well into the next decade. Speaking at the FT Metals and Mining Summit in London, Pant explained that the gap between supply and demand would be equivalent to the output of eight to ten mines the size of Escondida, the world's largest copper producer located in Chile. This projection underscores the scale of the challenge facing the industry as it tries to meet accelerating demand.

The deficit is not merely a distant concern; it reflects a combination of declining production from existing deposits and the need for new mine development just to maintain current output levels. According to Pant, traditional sources of copper consumption—population growth, industrial development, and urbanization—are now being supplemented by expanding digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, electricity network investment, and the global shift toward cleaner energy. By 2050, annual global copper demand is projected to exceed 50 million metric tons, with data centers alone potentially consuming around 3 million metric tons per year.

However, Pant drew a clear distinction between the anticipated long-term supply gap and immediate market shortages. She noted that temporary imbalances can arise when mining companies fail to meet production targets, tightening the market even before the structural deficit materializes. Recent mine disruptions and operational difficulties have already constrained output, and the availability of copper concentrate has become increasingly limited. The International Copper Study Group recently lowered its forecast for global mine production growth to 1.3% for the year, reflecting downward revisions for Indonesia, China, and Chile, though it expects growth to strengthen to over 3% in 2027.

Pant also acknowledged that near-term consumption could fluctuate based on expectations for AI-driven demand and investment activity in copper markets. Nevertheless, she maintained that such short-term movements do not alter BHP's longer-term supply and demand outlook. The company, already the world's largest copper producer, has been intensifying its focus on the metal. Copper accounted for more than 50% of BHP's underlying EBITDA for the first time in the 2025/26 financial year, and the company expects its internally developed projects to lift attributable copper output to approximately 2 million metric tons by 2035, targeting average annual growth of around 5% in copper-equivalent production between the 2026/27 and 2034/35 financial years.

Planned growth initiatives include expansions at Copper South Australia and Escondida, as well as the development of the Vicuna joint venture and the Resolution project in the U.S. These projects are critical to bridging the expected supply gap. If BHP's prediction of a structural shortage materializes, entities such as Numa Numa Resources Inc. could benefit from added demand and rising prices if their exploration and development efforts reach production level. The announcement, distributed via MiningNewsWire, a specialized communications platform focused on the global mining and resources sectors, highlights the strategic importance of copper as a key input for the energy transition and digital economy. As part of the Dynamic Brand Portfolio at IBN, MiningNewsWire delivers access to a vast network of wire solutions through InvestorWire and editorial syndication to 5,000+ outlets, ensuring that critical industry developments reach a wide audience of investors and stakeholders. The platform also offers press release enhancement and social media distribution to maximize impact, along with tailored corporate communications solutions. With such far-reaching implications, BHP's forecast serves as a clarion call for the mining industry to accelerate investment in new supply.
