Canada Nickel's Crawford Project Receives Federal Approval, Paving Way for Major Economic Impact

Canada Nickel Company Inc. has received a positive Decision Statement from the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Nature for its Crawford Nickel Project, marking the first mining approval under Canada's amended Impact Assessment Act since 2019. This milestone not only advances a major nickel project but also sets a precedent for future mining developments under the new federal regulatory framework.

The Crawford Nickel Project, located in Ontario, is estimated to contribute approximately $70 billion to Canada's GDP and support around 185,000 person-years of employment. This economic impact underscores the project's importance as a driver of national growth and job creation. The approval was also notable as the project was referred to Canada's Major Projects Office and selected as one of the first to advance under Ontario's 'One Project, One Process' framework, which aims to streamline regulatory processes and reduce duplication between federal and provincial assessments.

Noble Mineral Exploration Inc., which originally held the Crawford project before selling it to Canada Nickel in 2019, congratulated Canada Nickel on this achievement. Noble CEO Vance White stated, "We congratulate Canada Nickel on their announcement today of having secured Federal Approval for the Crawford Nickel Project. This development confirms the Company’s vision in having transferred the Crawford Nickel Project to the team at Canada Nickel in 2019, and as a company we are proud to see Canada Nickel advance through this milestone. This is an extremely important development. It should also serve as a model for the development of other properties held by East Timmins Nickel Ltd., a company established between Noble and Canada Nickel in which Noble has a 20% interest."

Noble, a Canadian-based junior exploration company, holds interests in various properties and securities, including shares in Canada Nickel, and retains a 20% stake in East Timmins Nickel Inc. The company also holds mineral exploration rights across approximately 70,000 hectares in Northern Ontario and additional properties in Quebec and Newfoundland. These holdings include the Project 81 area in Timmins-Cochrane, which hosts diversified drill-ready gold, nickel-cobalt, and base metal exploration targets.

The federal approval of the Crawford Nickel Project is a significant step for Canada's critical minerals strategy, as nickel is essential for electric vehicle batteries and clean energy technologies. By advancing this project, Canada strengthens its position in the global supply chain for critical minerals, potentially attracting further investment and development in the sector.

As the first mining project to receive a Decision Statement under the amended Impact Assessment Act, the Crawford project sets a benchmark for future approvals. The streamlined process under the new framework and the collaboration between federal and provincial governments could facilitate more efficient development of other mining projects, benefiting the Canadian economy and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
