TORONTO — Two extraordinary dogs have been inducted into the 2026 Purina Animal Hall of Fame™, recognized for their remarkable bravery and unwavering devotion in protecting their owners during life-threatening emergencies. From helping an owner escape a frozen Nova Scotia lake to defending an Ontario family from a black bear that forced its way into their home, these canine heroes demonstrated incredible instinct, courage and loyalty when it mattered most.
The annual honor, established by Nestlé Purina PetCare Canada, celebrates pets that have performed heroic acts. This year's inductees include Chloe, a dog from Nipigon, Ontario, who defended her family from a black bear that entered their home, and Timber, a dog from Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, who helped his owner escape from a frozen lake.
In Nipigon, Chloe's family was alerted to danger when the bear forced its way into their home. Chloe immediately sprang into action, barking and confronting the intruder. Her quick response alerted her husband, who was able to help confine the animal to the basement until police arrived. The family credits Chloe with preventing a potentially tragic outcome.
In Lawrencetown, Timber's heroism occurred during a walk when his owner fell through the ice on a frozen lake. Timber pulled forward, his harness catching on branches, providing the leverage his owner needed to climb out of the icy water. His owner credits him with helping save her life, describing the incident as a terrifying experience that turned into a miraculous rescue.
These stories highlight the deep bond between pets and their owners and the extraordinary measures animals will take to protect those they love. The Purina Animal Hall of Fame has been honoring such heroes since 1968, with more than 200 pets inducted to date.
"These dogs exemplify the incredible courage and loyalty that pets bring to our lives," said a spokesperson for Purina. "Their actions are a testament to the powerful connection between humans and animals."
