CICC Global Institute Brings China Economic Dialogue to Southeast Asia with Bangkok Forum

The CICC Global Institute (CGI) held its 2026 Q4 Macro Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 13, under the theme "China's Economy amid Global Rebalancing: New Paradigms and New Industries." The event marked the first time the CGI Quarterly Macro Forum was convened in Southeast Asia. According to Media OutReach Newswire, the forum took place during the week of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, a timing that positioned it as a direct contribution to international discussions on global economic opportunities and challenges.

The significance of the forum lies in its effort to present Chinese perspectives at a moment when global economic governance is under strain and when China's growth model is undergoing fundamental change. Yanliang Miao, Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of CICC, used his keynote to argue that understanding China requires a global rebalancing perspective. He pointed to the dynamism of emerging industries and the implications of shifting from old to new growth engines for jobs, incomes and demand. Miao also noted that China is working toward a growth model supported by higher household incomes and services-led consumption, alongside its green and digital transitions.

On the international monetary order, Miao observed that shifts in the global economy, trade networks and financial technology are driving evolution toward a more diversified international monetary system. He emphasized that economic and trade strength do not automatically translate into international currency status, and that institutional credibility and the depth and breadth of financial markets remain central to the internationalization of the renminbi. This framing matters because it signals that Chinese financial elites are thinking about currency internationalization in terms of market depth and institutional trust, not just trade volume.

Huimin Wu, Executive Dean of CGI and Deputy Head of Research Department at CICC, linked the forum's themes to The New Pattern of Dual Circulation, a book jointly published this year by CGI and CICC Research Department. Wu noted that China's economy is entering a new stage of development, with trade and outward investment undergoing a paradigm shift. Emerging industries are becoming increasingly important drivers of growth in the global economy, and these changes are both part of and shaped by broader global economic rebalancing.

The forum gathered experts from the International Monetary Fund, the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office, the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the National University of Singapore, ICBC Standard Bank, Wood Mackenzie, and NSQ Capital. Discussions covered transformations in China's trade and outward investment and their global implications, as well as prospects for emerging industries such as innovative pharmaceuticals, green energy, and artificial intelligence.

Holding the forum in Bangkok, rather than in Hong Kong or Beijing, is an innovative exploration for CGI. It reflects a deliberate effort to strengthen international exchanges, present China's perspective, and foster deeper understanding of China's economic transformation process. For Southeast Asian audiences, the forum offers a chance to engage directly with Chinese economic thinking at a time when supply chains, capital flows and technology standards are being reconfigured. Looking ahead, CGI intends to continue deepening its international engagement and building an international dialogue platform focused on China's economy, contributing to greater mutual trust and consensus. The move suggests that China's financial research institutions are seeking to move beyond one-way communication and into sustained dialogue with global and regional stakeholders.
