Alfredo E. Cordoba, managing partner of Cordoba Legal Group, says the years he spent working in collections before founding the Boca Raton-based consumer law firm in 2019 fundamentally shaped the advocacy approach the firm uses today. That prior vantage point, he argues, gives the firm an unusual understanding of how consumer disputes unfold from both sides and why most consumers only seek help after a problem has already escalated.
Before launching Cordoba Legal Group, Cordoba worked in collections, placing him on the opposite side of the table from the people his firm now represents. "You see the calls come in, you see the letters go out, and you see how much pressure a person can be under before they ever talk to a lawyer," Cordoba said. "That is not something you forget once you move into consumer advocacy." That experience, he suggests, provides the firm with insight into the tactics and pressures consumers face, enabling more effective representation.
Cordoba has said the central lesson from that period was simple: most consumers do not know what their rights are until something has already gone wrong. By then, they are often reacting instead of planning. "People do not wake up thinking about consumer protection law," he said. "They think about it the day a business will not return their money, or the day a contract turns out to mean something different than what they were told. That is late. That is the hardest point to start from." He describes this as the gap his firm was built to close: giving people a place to turn once a problem has landed on them, with a team that understands both sides of how these disputes unfold.
Cordoba's advice to newer attorneys in consumer law is rooted in that same experience. He tells them not to assume a client's frustration is the whole story. "A person who is angry about a bill or a contract is usually also scared," he said. "They are worried about money they do not have, or a decision they cannot undo. If you only hear the complaint, you miss the fear underneath it. Good representation listens for both." He has also said the collections side of the business taught him how much language matters. Letters and calls that sound routine to a company can feel final to a consumer. Cordoba has carried that awareness into how his firm communicates with clients, favoring plain explanations over legal shorthand whenever possible.

Cordoba points to that record as proof the lesson has held up in practice, not just in conversation. "We cannot win every case," he said. "What we can control is whether a client is better off for having come to us, and whether they understood what was happening at every step. That standard came from watching what it looks like when people do not get that." He has said the firm measures its own work against a simple question borrowed from that earlier chapter: would this explanation have been clear to someone who has never dealt with a legal matter before. If the answer is no, the firm reworks it.
"Passion for this work is not enough on its own," Cordoba said. "You need the discipline to keep translating the law into something a person can actually use. That is the part I learned before I ever started this firm, and it is the part I still check myself on."
