Counterflow Coffee and Bay City Brewing Launch Witching Hour Coffee Stout, a Nod to San Diego's Punk Roots

Counterflow Coffee and Bay City Brewing have joined forces to release Witching Hour, a 5.5% ABV coffee stout that pays homage to the punk rock ethos of Southern California. The brew, which debuts at a free public event on November 13 at Bay City Brewing's downtown San Diego location, represents a deliberate shift from their previous collaboration, the 9% ABV Gambino Coffee Stout, toward a more sessionable and coffee-forward experience.

According to Austin Pinder, head of brewing at Bay City, the goal was to create something accessible without sacrificing quality. “This time, we wanted something more accessible to the masses. We created a smoother, lighter, and even more coffee-forward flavor,” Pinder said. The addition of Counterflow’s signature cold brew provides a fresh aroma and subtle espresso character, resulting in a beer that balances boldness with approachability.

The partnership stems from a shared appreciation for the creative and rebellious energy that defines Southern California. Geoff Davis of Counterflow Coffee emphasized the cultural significance: “It’s about honoring that punk rock energy that shaped us while keeping it true to San Diego’s craft scene.” This collaboration follows the success of last year’s Gambino Coffee Stout and represents the next chapter in their creative partnership.

The release party on Thursday, November 13, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Bay City Brewing's downtown location (627 8th Ave, San Diego, CA 92101) will feature three variants of Witching Hour: Apple Pie, Coconut Macadamia Nut, and the Original. Attendees can also enjoy Counterflow Coffee’s iconic espresso martinis, with flavors to be revealed at the event, and food from ELE Burger. The gritty atmosphere aims to reflect the community that defines San Diego.

The visual identity and storytelling for Witching Hour were developed by Counterflow Coffee's marketing team, channeling the wistful edge of SoCal punk with a modern and refined aesthetic. After launch, the beer will be available on tap at Bay City Brewing's Midway and Downtown locations and distributed to bars and stores throughout Southern California.

This release underscores a growing trend of craft breweries and coffee roasters collaborating to create hybrid beverages that appeal to both markets. By dialing back the intensity and emphasizing coffee flavor, Counterflow and Bay City have positioned Witching Hour as a beer that can be enjoyed across different occasions, from beachside pints to home consumption. The emphasis on accessibility and community connection highlights how local partnerships can drive innovation while staying rooted in regional identity.
