Domestic Hot Rolled Structural Steel Production Strengthens Indonesia's Construction Supply Chain

Indonesia's rapid infrastructure development, from commercial buildings and warehouses to bridges and energy facilities, depends on a steady supply of structural steel that meets precise engineering requirements. The availability of hot rolled structural steel profiles with consistent dimensions, mechanical properties, and proper documentation is critical for contractors and fabricators who must plan fabrication and installation schedules. Domestic production plays a key role in shortening communication channels, reducing lead times, and ensuring that projects receive materials that comply with applicable standards. Reliable steel suppliers are therefore essential to maintaining the momentum of Indonesia's construction supply chain.

One company addressing this need is PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), a steel manufacturer operating from Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java. GYS produces H-Beam, IWF (Wide Flange Steel), U Channel, and Equal Angle through a hot rolling process, where heated steel is passed through rolling stands to form the required cross-sectional profiles. These products serve as beams, columns, bracing members, and other load-bearing components in steel construction systems. The company uses Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology, which allows for the use of recycled steel and supports a more circular steelmaking process.

The importance of domestic production extends beyond logistics. When project teams specify hot rolled steel profiles, they must consider far more than nominal dimensions. H-beam sizes, flange width, web thickness, flange thickness, weight per metre, material grade, and applicable standards all influence structural performance. Profiles with similar nominal heights can differ significantly in weight and mechanical properties. Verification of chemical composition, yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation is typically documented through a Mill Test Certificate (MTC), which provides traceability from production to delivery.

GYS's integrated manufacturing process begins with steel scrap, which is melted and refined in an EAF, continuously cast into beam blanks, blooms, and billets, then reheated and rolled into finished profiles. The process continues through cooling, straightening, cutting, marking, and final inspection. This route enables the production of a wide range of structural steel profiles, including high-strength steel and products designed for seismic-resistant applications in Indonesia.

Tony Taniwan, President Director of PT Garuda Yamato Steel, noted that demand for structural products is coming from several construction sectors. "We are seeing continued demand for structural products across different construction sectors across Indonesia. Our focus is to coordinate production, processing, and delivery so customers receive accurate information regarding specifications and schedules," he said.

Material availability remains a critical issue because delays involving a single profile can interrupt fabrication even when workers, machinery, and other components are ready. Domestic production helps mitigate such risks by enabling faster confirmation of specifications, documentation, and delivery planning. GYS also operates a Steel Service Center offering CNC drilling, cutting, sawing, and straightening, allowing buyers to obtain processed materials directly from the mill. Smaller or urgent orders may be sourced through distributors holding local stock.

As Indonesia continues to invest in infrastructure and industrial facilities, the role of domestic hot rolled structural steel production becomes increasingly important. It supports the construction supply chain by providing verified, compliant materials and reducing dependence on imports. However, descriptions such as the largest or best steel mill should be verified against documented capacity and certifications rather than accepted without evidence. Ultimately, product selection depends on engineering calculations, project specifications, and the standards applicable to each structure.
