Donald Deibler Urges Communities to Bolster Youth Sports Participation

Donald Deibler, a business owner and Business Manager of All Stars Ice Cream and Cafe Bakery, is advocating for stronger community support for youth sports. He emphasizes that sports offer young people more than just competition; they provide a platform for physical activity, friendship, teamwork, and community integration. Deibler, who grew up in Donaldson, Pennsylvania, credits sports with giving him a positive focus during his youth and wants to ensure today's children have similar opportunities.

Deibler's personal experiences have shaped his commitment to youth sports. He volunteers as a youth sports coach and supports local programs like Tri-Valley Little League. His involvement extends to his business practices, where he ensures his establishments contribute to community initiatives. 'When you coach kids, you see how important encouragement can be,' Deibler said. 'You want them to learn how to work together and keep improving.'

The importance of youth sports is backed by research. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, which can improve muscle and bone health, cardiovascular fitness, brain health, and academic performance. Organized sports are one way to achieve this, but participation is not universal. According to data from the Aspen Institute, only 54% of U.S. children in that age group played on a sports team or took lessons in 2022, down from 58% in 2017, and well below the Healthy People 2030 target of 63%.

Deibler believes that supporting youth sports does not require grand gestures. He encourages individuals to volunteer with recreational programs, attend local games, coach if qualified, help maintain fields, donate equipment, or simply ask existing organizations what they need. He also suggests that parents can foster active lifestyles by encouraging children to engage in activities they enjoy, whether organized or informal.

Deibler's philosophy extends to his business life. He is involved with Dead Horse Beer & Burritos, owned by his wife, and is hands-on in operations, even stepping into the kitchen when needed. 'I've always believed that you have to be willing to help where the work is happening,' he said. 'It doesn't matter what your title is.'

Deibler calls on community members to identify local needs and contribute their time or resources. 'You don't always have to do something huge to make a difference,' he said. 'Sometimes it is giving your time, helping a team, or just showing kids that people in the community care.' By taking simple steps, communities can help reverse the declining trend in youth sports participation and provide young people with the benefits of an active, engaged lifestyle.
