Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province, is cementing its role as a dominant flower trading hub in Asia, backed by record annual volumes, high-speed auctions, and increasingly efficient logistics. The market's central trading platform, the Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center, begins daily operations at 1:00 p.m., where buyers can place bids in as little as 0.6 seconds as prices descend on electronic screens, enabling rapid trade of large quantities of fresh-cut flowers.

Preceding the Qixi Festival, known as China's Valentine's Day, the market witnessed a substantial surge in trading activity. Tens of millions of flower stems were sold to domestic and international markets during this peak period. According to the trading center, the average price for major fresh-cut flower categories rose to 1.1 to 1.3 yuan per stem, approximately 15 percent higher than pre-festival levels. Premium flowers commanded even higher prices, with high-quality roses reaching nearly 15 yuan ($2.23) per stem.

In 2025, Dounan recorded a trading volume of 15.476 billion fresh-cut flowers, with total transaction value hitting 13.484 billion yuan (around $2 billion). The market now hosts 3,300 enterprises and over 15,000 business entities and individual proprietors. Of Dounan's roughly 70,000 permanent residents, 46,500 are employed in the flower industry. Approximately seven out of every ten fresh-cut flowers sold in China originate from Dounan, and its distribution network reaches across China and more than 50 countries and regions worldwide.

The auction system at Dounan is tailored to the perishable nature of fresh-cut flowers. Auctioneer Li Qian explains, “Since fresh flowers are perishable goods, we use a descending-price auction format. This helps facilitate rapid circulation.” The descending-price model requires buyers to respond within about 0.6 seconds, supporting the high turnover essential for the industry. The auction process is seamlessly integrated with sorting, packaging, and transportation, minimizing the time between trading and shipment.

Logistics are critical to maintaining flower quality, as it is highly sensitive to transportation and storage time. Tang Minghong, a client manager with the flower logistics division of SF Express Yunnan, notes that fresh flowers have among the most demanding logistics requirements in the fresh produce sector. Trading begins in the afternoon, and pickup, packaging, and dispatch can be completed as early as 3:00 a.m., allowing flowers to swiftly enter domestic distribution networks. For international shipments, Dounan has established logistics routes to destinations such as Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia, with customers receiving shipments within two days, according to logistics operators.

The combination of large-scale production, centralized trading, high-speed auctions, and integrated logistics has enabled Dounan to develop a comprehensive supply and distribution network. This network connects flower growers in Yunnan with buyers and consumers throughout China and overseas, supporting the expansion of the province's fresh-cut flower industry into international markets. With billions of stems traded annually and distribution spanning more than 50 countries and regions, Dounan is emerging as a vital regional hub for fresh-cut flower trading, contributing to the global growth of China's flower industry.
