Dr. Sam Adeyemi Identifies the 'Brick Wall' Stalling Business Growth and How Leaders Can Break Through

Many entrepreneurs find themselves stuck between launching a business and scaling it, hitting what executive coach Dr. Sam Adeyemi calls a "brick wall." No matter how hard they push, growth stalls. Adeyemi, an Atlanta-based strategic leadership expert, says the problem is not effort but approach: the skills that got a founder to a certain point are often the very ones preventing the next leap.

"Many businesses hit a brick wall sometime between the starting and expansion phases, where no matter what they do, they just can't seem to scale," says Adeyemi, author of SHIFTS: 6 Steps to Transform Your Mindset and Elevate Your Leadership. "The solution is in recognizing that what got you here may not be what gets you to the next level."

In a young company, founders typically handle everything themselves. That hands-on style can be an asset in the early days, but as the business grows, it becomes a bottleneck. Decisions, operations, and problem-solving all funnel through one person, limiting the organization's capacity to expand. Scaling instead requires entrepreneurs to build systems, develop talent, and empower teams rather than remain at the center of every activity.

Simply working harder may not solve the problem, Adeyemi says. "Breaking through the brick wall requires SHIFTing how you think, lead, and operate — evolving into a leader that creates scalable systems, eliminates activities that drain resources, and transforms their leadership identity to support 10x growth… or more!"

Drawing on the principles in his book SHIFTS (Wiley), Adeyemi outlines six steps for transforming one's leadership: See, Hear, Insight, Formulate, Transform, and Succeed. This process model helps leaders break free from limiting assumptions, discover new possibilities, turn fresh insights into meaningful action, and unlock the potential of those around them, transforming not only how they lead, but what their organizations can achieve.

The implications extend beyond individual businesses. Adeyemi's work reaches a broad audience: more than 52,000 alumni have graduated from Daystar Leadership Academy programs, and more than 3 million CEOs and high-performing individuals follow him on top social media sites. His earlier book, Dear Leader: Your Flagship Guide to Successful Leadership, also addresses the mindset shifts required for effective leadership. He holds a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership from Virginia's Regent University and is a member of the International Leadership Association.

For founders facing a growth plateau, Adeyemi's message is clear: the barrier is often internal. Breaking through requires a deliberate evolution in leadership identity and operating style, not just more hours on the job. As companies seek to scale in a challenging economic environment, that shift may be the difference between stagnation and sustainable growth.
