Eco Expo Asia 2026 Debuts ASEAN and Qinghai Pavilions, Signals Hong Kong's Growing Role in Global Green Transition

When Eco Expo Asia 2026 opens its doors from 26 to 29 October at AsiaWorld-Expo, it will do so against a backdrop of sweeping policy shifts that are turning green transformation from aspiration into market rule. Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, and co-organised by the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the 21st edition of the fair will host over 340 exhibitors from 16 countries and regions, including first-time participants from Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The significance of this year's expo lies not just in its scale but in its timing. Last month, the Hong Kong SAR Government unveiled its Policy Address and first Five-Year Plan, setting out a vision for a green and liveable city. Across the region, China, the European Union and many ASEAN economies are actively pursuing carbon-neutrality or net-zero emission targets, driving decarbonisation through regulations and industrial policies. As HKTDC Associate Executive Director Silas Chu noted, green transformation has shifted from policy aspiration to market rule, and the expo aims to help enterprises capitalise on the new prospects emerging from this transition.

The debut of an ASEAN Pavilion, featuring 13 green technology companies from eight member countries, alongside a first-ever Qinghai Pavilion, signals the growing internationalisation of the event and the deepening of cross-regional cooperation. Some 200 key officials and representatives from the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Belt and Road countries and ASEAN will attend, further cementing the expo as a platform for policy and business exchange. Business confidence in Hong Kong as an ESG hub is also strengthening. The HKTDC ESG Index 2026 rose to 67.3, up from 64.2 last year and well above the neutral threshold of 50. The survey revealed that 93% of respondents have integrated ESG into their overall business decision-making processes, while the share of businesses sourcing or selling ESG-related products and services jumped from 29% in 2025 to 46% in 2026. Chu said the rise reflects the continued strengthening of global businesses' confidence in Hong Kong's role as an ESG business hub, with ESG evolving beyond a compliance requirement into a source of competitive advantage. The expo's four thematic areas—Green Energy in Motion, Frontier Green Tech, Building for a Greener City and From Waste to Worth—showcase innovations with real-world impact. Among the highlights, EcoCeres Ltd. makes its debut with advanced renewable sustainable aviation fuel made from waste materials, while Stellerus Technology Limited will display MUSICO, the world's first lightweight, high-resolution, high-precision synergistic greenhouse gases observatory, already deployed on China's Tiangong space station. These technologies illustrate how research achievements are being transformed into practical environmental applications.

The event also serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, with over 30 forums and seminars bringing together more than 80 government officials, industry leaders and business representatives. Notably, the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China will co-host the Belt and Road Green Innovation Conference in Hong Kong for the first time, while the second edition of the 'Green Silk Road' International Training Programme will be jointly organised by the Environmental Protection Department, the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

For the HKTDC, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, the expo is part of a broader effort to promote Hong Kong as a two-way global investment and business hub. The council organises international exhibitions, conferences and business missions to create opportunities for companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. It also provides market insights through research reports and digital news channels.

The implications of this year's expo extend beyond the show floor. As governments and businesses race to meet carbon-neutrality targets, platforms that connect green technology providers with investors, policymakers and end-users become critical. Hong Kong's ability to convene these stakeholders—evidenced by the expanded pavilion line-up and the strong ESG Index reading—positions the city as a linchpin in the region's green transition. The expo's Public Day on 29 October, with free admission, will further engage the community, offering workshops and seminars aimed at promoting sustainable lifestyles. For those seeking to understand where the green economy is heading, Eco Expo Asia offers a timely snapshot of the technologies, policies and partnerships shaping the future.
