EKPO to Showcase Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology for Special-Purpose Vehicles at Hydrogen Technology World Expo 2026

EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies (EKPO) will exhibit at Hydrogen Technology World Expo in Hamburg from October 20 to 22, 2026, at Booth 7H46 in Hall 7. The company will showcase its portfolio of high-performance fuel cell stacks and components, including the HyFleet vehicle—the world’s first road-legal hydrogen-powered side-by-side. This announcement matters because it signals a significant step forward in applying hydrogen fuel cell technology to energy-intensive special-purpose vehicles, such as those used in agriculture, forestry, tourism, municipal services, and industry. By proving that fuel cells can handle demanding on- and off-road conditions, EKPO is helping to expand hydrogen’s role beyond passenger cars into sectors that require long operating hours and high availability.

The HyFleet project, developed by BRP-Rotax in collaboration with industry and research partners, demonstrates the practical potential of hydrogen in specialty vehicles. The vehicle achieves a range of up to 400 kilometers and refuels in approximately five minutes. At its core is EKPO’s NM12 fuel cell stack, which delivers high power density and forms the basis for a 90 kW fuel cell system with efficiency up to 60% and rapid response to load changes. Extensive real-world testing has validated the system’s suitability, and a passive hydrogen recirculation system developed with HyCentA adds robustness and efficiency. The system also features cold-start and freeze-start capability at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, making it viable for winter and alpine conditions.

Dr. Stefan Dwenger, Managing Director of EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies GmbH, said, “HyFleet shows how we are applying our many years of fuel cell expertise to new mobility applications. Hydrogen is particularly well suited to demanding on- and off-road applications that require long operating hours and high availability.” Stefan Arndt, General Manager BRP-Rotax, VP R&D Powertrain, added, “HyFleet has demonstrated that a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain can also work successfully in a compact special-purpose vehicle designed for off-road use.” The HyFleet initiative is generating insights into hydrogen-powered specialty vehicles across multiple sectors, taking an integrated approach from local green hydrogen production to powertrain, vehicle, and scalable refueling infrastructure.

At the expo, EKPO will also display its extensive fuel cell portfolio, including stacks and components for mobile and stationary applications with power outputs from 16 kW to more than 400 kW. The company’s modular platforms are engineered for high power density, efficiency, and dependable operation. Additionally, EKPO offers metal bipolar plates for PEM electrolyzers, supporting green hydrogen production. With more than 20 years of experience and industrialization capabilities from the automotive industry, EKPO is positioned to drive the adoption of hydrogen across various mobility applications.
