Enapter AG, a global greentech company specializing in AEM electrolysers for green hydrogen production, has received a pilot order worth approximately EUR 0.5 million from a US drone manufacturer. The order includes AEM electrolysers from the 4.1 series, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. This development marks a significant step in expanding hydrogen applications beyond traditional industrial use.
The hydrogen-producing AEM modules will be integrated into mobile, all-terrain refuelling systems designed to generate hydrogen directly at the point of operation, using only water and solar power without requiring a grid connection. This approach eliminates the logistical challenges associated with transporting and storing hydrogen in large compressed gas cylinders, which have previously hindered the deployment of hydrogen-powered drones in remote areas.
Compared to battery-electric propulsion, hydrogen propulsion offers drones significantly longer flight and mission times, as well as rapid refuelling capabilities. The mobile refuelling systems provide a practical solution for extended operations in off-grid environments, where access to conventional fuel infrastructure is limited or non-existent.
For Enapter, this pilot project opens up a new field of application that leverages the strengths of its modular AEM technology: compact footprint, robust operation, and the ability to scale hydrogen production by simply adding more modules. The global market for long-range, long-endurance drones is expanding rapidly, creating substantial growth opportunities for Enapter's technology.
