Fisher House Southern California has launched its annual Veterans Day Giving campaign, a fundraising effort that directly supports active-duty military members, veterans, and their families who must travel for medical care. The campaign matters because it addresses a hidden cost of treatment: when a service member or veteran needs specialized care, families often face steep out-of-pocket expenses for lodging, transportation, and daily essentials, on top of the stress of illness. Fisher Houses normally provide a “home away from home” within walking distance of military and VA medical centers, but several Southern California facilities lack an adjacent Fisher House. For those locations, the organization arranges and offers lodging for families at the nearest hotel, provided eligibility requirements are met, ensuring no family has to choose between being present for a loved one and avoiding financial strain.
The implications of this announcement extend beyond holiday generosity. Public contributions to the campaign fund temporary housing and support services across Southern California, helping families remain close to their loved ones during treatment. Donations made before year end will be doubled thanks to the Larry and Helen Hoag Foundation, which will match every gift through December 31, 2026, up to $50,000. That matching commitment effectively doubles the impact of each contribution, allowing the organization to serve more families at a time when travel and lodging costs can quickly become prohibitive. For families already coping with the emotional toll of serious medical treatment, reliable no-cost lodging can be the difference between focused recovery and financial crisis.
Fisher House Southern California, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supports five Fisher Houses across four Southern California locations. Through donor support and community partnerships, it helps families stay together by providing no-cost lodging and, when Fisher House accommodations are unavailable, assistance with nearby temporary lodging. The organization’s work reduces the financial burden of travel and lodging so families can focus on healing.
