Mitch Gould, founder and CEO of Nutritional Products International (NPI), credits three generations of family entrepreneurship for his success in revolutionizing how global health and wellness brands enter the American marketplace. Gould's grandfather owned a factory in Brooklyn and maintained a showroom in the Empire State Building, while his father Jerry Gould expanded into manufacturing and distribution. This legacy laid the groundwork for Gould's proprietary "Evolution of Distribution®" platform, which integrates FDA compliance, global logistics, retail introductions, sales, and marketing under one roof.
Growing up in Brooklyn, Gould witnessed firsthand the hustle and handshakes that defined his family's business. "My grandfather owned a factory in Brooklyn and had a showroom in the Empire State Building - that was his world," Gould said. "My father Jerry took that same spirit into manufacturing and distribution." By middle school, Gould understood that retail was a legacy, not just a business.
Entering the retail industry in 1986, Gould's early career was shaped by a pivotal relationship with R.D. Wells, a seasoned retail veteran who connected him with Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank during Home Depot's national expansion. "Between my father, my grandfather, and R.D. Wells, I couldn't ask for better mentors," Gould said. This mentorship led to Gould representing major consumer brands like Igloo, Rubbermaid, Sunbeam, and Miracle-Gro, as well as celebrity lines including Steven Seagal's Lightning Bolt Energy Drink and Hulk Hogan's Hogan Nutrition, securing placements at Walmart, Costco, GNC, CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, and Home Depot.
One of Gould's most consequential achievements was his early partnership with Amazon. At a time when the e-commerce giant was best known as an online bookstore, Gould recognized the potential of selling nutritional supplements online. Working directly with Amazon's buyers, he helped build the sports nutrition and health products category, growing it to over $100 million in sales. This experience inspired the "Evolution of Distribution®."
In 2007, Gould founded NPI and created the "Evolution of Distribution®" platform, which compresses what once took global brands 18 to 24 months into a streamlined market entry. "The Evolution of Distribution® is really the natural next chapter of what my family has always done," Gould said. "My grandfather manufactured it in Brooklyn and showcased it to the world from the Empire State Building. My father Jerry distributed it. And I built the system that does all of it at once - at scale, for brands all over the world."
Today, NPI stands as one of the most trusted brand launch and distribution firms in the United States, helping domestic and international brands navigate the complexities of U.S. retail. Gould's story is chronicled in his memoir, The Blonde, the Ferrari, and the Kwan: The Quintessential American Success Story, available on Amazon.
Gould's journey from his grandfather's Brooklyn factory to the executive suites of America's largest retailers underscores the enduring power of family legacy and entrepreneurial grit. His platform continues to drive the growth of sports nutrition and dietary supplements across major retail and e-commerce platforms.
