In a culture where addiction and mental health struggles are increasingly prevalent, the release of Matthew Linehan's new book, 'Free Indeed: The Seven Keys to Unlock Your Freedom,' offers a message of hope grounded in personal experience and biblical truth. Linehan, a U.S. Army veteran and co-founder of Men in Christ Global Ministries, has announced the publication of his debut Christian nonfiction work, which details his journey from nearly three decades of substance abuse to a life transformed by faith.
The book, released by Lucid Books, a Houston-area hybrid publisher, introduces seven biblical principles that Linehan credits with breaking the strongholds of addiction, shame, and fear in his own life. Written for individuals struggling with various forms of bondage, as well as for families, ministry leaders, and caregivers, the book combines personal testimony with Scripture-based teaching and practical discipleship.
Linehan's path to freedom began after a childhood marked by the suicide of his father, an event that plunged him into decades of pain and addiction. It was not until January 2015, when he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, that he experienced what he describes as a complete transformation. "After nearly 30 years of addiction, I encountered Jesus Christ and was completely set free," Linehan said. "I wrote this book because I want people to know that no matter how long they have struggled, freedom is still possible. There is hope, and there is a way forward."
The material for the book was initially developed as a curriculum that Linehan and his wife, Emily, taught at a large church in Houston. Seeing the impact of the teachings on others, Linehan combined the curriculum with his own testimony, creating a resource that is both deeply personal and broadly applicable. "I believe this book is different because I lived it, walked it out, and came through the other side to talk about it," Linehan explained. "These principles are not theories to me. They are biblical truths that transformed my life and became the foundation of the message God has called me to share."
The writing process, which began in earnest around 2020, was not without its challenges. Linehan, who lives with ADHD, had to exercise persistence, organization, and determination to complete the manuscript. Yet his purpose remained clear: to offer hope to those who feel trapped by their circumstances. "If readers take away only one thing from this book, I want it to be hope," Linehan said. "Jesus offers abundant new life to everyone who is willing to surrender. Freedom is not reserved for a select few, and no one is too broken, too ashamed, or too far gone to experience the transforming power of God's grace."
Beyond his writing, Linehan continues to minister through Men in Christ Global Ministries, an organization dedicated to fostering spiritual growth among men. He is also a graduate of Lakewood Church's Pastoral Care Internship and has served as a men's ministry director in the Katy, Texas area. Currently residing in Taipei, Taiwan, with his wife and daughter, Linehan remains active in international ministry and travels regularly to Houston.
