For years, construction workers have relied on plastic caps to cover the sharp tops of steel star pickets and T-posts, but these caps often crack, snap, or blow away, leaving dangerous exposed steel. Anthony Burr, a former concreter, experienced this frustration firsthand and decided to create a solution. His patented steel cap, now distributed through Bunnings Warehouse across Australia, is set to enter the US market, promising a safer and more sustainable alternative.
The turning point came during a rainy Saturday shift when Burr ran out of plastic caps and had to leave the site to buy more, just to ensure safety over the weekend. "That's when the idea came to me, and I thought, I'm going to explore this and see if we can create a solution," Burr said. Despite initial skepticism from manufacturers—"The first 10 to 15 people that I went to said, 'Oh, you can't do this; it's not possible'"—Burr persevered, eventually finding a partner willing to prototype his idea.
The initial design was bulky and required welding onto the post, but the current version is lightweight and presses directly onto the picket, eliminating extra labor on site. The company has secured patents in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the United States, validating the innovation. The product, made from high-strength low-alloy steel, removes sharp edges and injury risk, while replacing single-use plastic that often ends up as landfill or roadside litter. More details on the cap's construction and applications are available on the Safety Pickets product page.
The distribution agreement with Bunnings Warehouse, Australia's largest hardware and trade retailer, marked a significant milestone. Burr noted that the product is now available in every Australian state, with no smaller regional distributors in between. This direct partnership underscores the product's market readiness and the growing demand for improved safety on construction, civil, agricultural, and municipal sites.
Looking ahead, Burr is focusing on the US market. Conversations are already underway with contacts in Florida's road and infrastructure sector, signaling early interest. For Burr, the story behind the product is as important as the product itself. "A tool built out of genuine, repeated frustration on a real jobsite, rather than a corporate research exercise, is what he believes will resonate with US buyers and partners," the company stated. This authenticity, combined with the product's patented design, positions Safety Pickets as a compelling solution for the American market.
Safety Pickets, Inc. was founded by Anthony Burr to address the persistent problem of plastic caps failing on job sites. The company's reusable steel cap is already making inroads in Australia and is now expanding into the US. As the construction industry continues to prioritize worker safety and environmental sustainability, this innovation offers a practical, durable solution that could become a new standard.
