Frontieras North America and Western Fuels have announced a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a mine-mouth FASForm processing facility at the Dry Fork Mine near Gillette, Wyoming. This collaboration marks a significant step in scaling Frontieras' patented FASForm Solid Carbon Fractionation technology, which converts coal into valuable products while minimizing environmental impact.
The proposed facility is designed to process up to approximately 2.7 million tons of coal annually initially, with potential expansion to 5.4 million tons at full build-out. Under the MOU, Western Fuels will supply coal feedstock and purchase ultra-low-sulfur diesel produced at the facility, while also leveraging its transportation capabilities to move product streams. This integration aims to create a seamless supply chain from coal extraction to end-use products.
FASForm technology utilizes a continuous, closed-loop process to convert coal into products such as FASCarbon, ultra-low-sulfur diesel, and naphtha. These products have diverse applications, from clean fuels to industrial chemicals. FASCarbon produced at the Wyoming facility could be transported to Western Fuels Association member utilities under separate commercial terms or sold into international markets, opening new revenue streams.
The importance of this development lies in its potential to redefine coal utilization. Traditionally, coal has been a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. However, FASForm technology offers a zero-waste process that produces cleaner fuels and chemicals, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints.
