Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, known as the Piece Concept, effective for tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026. The new policy shifts from the traditional weight-based system to a piece-based allowance, providing passengers with greater clarity and certainty when planning their baggage.
Under the Piece Concept, checked baggage allowances will be determined by the number of pieces and the maximum permitted weight per piece, rather than the combined weight of all baggage. Depending on the route, travel class, and fare category, passengers can check up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, for a total of up to 64 kilograms.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the implementation reflects the company's commitment to delivering a modern, consistent, and transparent travel experience. Clearer limits on baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily from the initial stages of their journey.
For domestic Economy Class passengers, the allowance will be one piece up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers will receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each. On international routes, Economy Class passengers can check two pieces up to 23 kilograms each, and Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each.
Compared to the previous Weight Concept, the Piece Concept increases total baggage allowances significantly. For example, on domestic services, Economy Class allowance rises from 20 kg to 23 kg, Business Class from 30 kg to 64 kg, and First Class from 40 kg to 64 kg. On international services, Economy Class allowance increases from 30 kg to 46 kg, Business Class from 40 kg to 64 kg, and First Class from 50 kg to 64 kg. Passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage allowance.
Mills added that the Piece Concept is widely adopted globally and its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardization and support more efficient baggage handling, especially for connecting international flights.
