GeoVax, an Atlanta-based biotechnology company, has spent years developing vaccines against high-consequence hemorrhagic fever viruses using its Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform. Its portfolio includes candidates for Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, and Marburg virus, all of which have shown protective efficacy in non-human primate lethal-challenge studies. We are prepared to engage with WHO, Africa CDC, national public health authorities, and other appropriate organizations to determine whether our vaccine candidates, technology, or scientific expertise could contribute to the response." He added that the company is open to making vaccine materials available for evaluation against BDBV.
GeoVax's lead infectious disease program remains GEO-MVA, an MVA-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox, which is advancing through an immunobridging regulatory pathway. This program includes clinical trial components planned for African regions, including areas affected by the current Ebola outbreak. These ongoing relationships provide a natural avenue for exploring how GeoVax's broader capabilities might assist public health efforts.
The company's MVA platform also offers strategic optionality. GeoVax retains a portfolio of hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates that have demonstrated efficacy in animal models, and it is open to collaborations, licensing agreements, and public-private partnerships. Such arrangements could bring resources to further develop these assets without diverting focus from GEO-MVA.
The WHO has noted that the outbreak is on a trajectory that could exceed the death toll of the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which killed over 11,000 people. Transmission continues across challenging and conflict-affected areas, complicating response efforts. GeoVax's willingness to contribute its expertise and candidates could provide a valuable tool in the fight against this deadly virus.
GeoVax's commitment extends beyond immediate response. The company is working to overcome historical limitations of MVA vaccines, including developing a continuous cell-line manufacturing process to improve scalability and exploring single-dose regimens and microarray patch delivery.
