Global Youth Powerhouse Summit 2026 Draws US$10 Billion in Venture Capital to Hong Kong Start-ups

Hong Kong's ambitions to cement itself as a global hub for innovation and talent received a significant boost on 5 October, as the Global Youth Powerhouse Summit 2026 convened at the Conrad Hong Kong. Organised by Hong Kong Youth Professional Global Advocacy, the event drew more than 600 in-person participants and online attendees from over 60 countries and regions, making it the largest edition yet. The summit coincided with the release of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's first Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development (2026–2030) and the latest Policy Address, providing a timely platform to align young professionals with the city's strategic direction.

The presence of venture funds managing an estimated US$10 billion underscored the event's importance as a bridge between capital and entrepreneurship. Eleven venture funds, including the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, Gobi Partners GBA, and HKSTP Ventures, participated in a start-up pitching session featuring 15 emerging companies. These funds have collectively invested in over 600 start-ups across more than 30 economies and backed at least nine unicorns, such as Airwallex and Animoca Brands. Dr Kevin Lau, Founding Convenor of Hong Kong Youth Professional Global Advocacy, emphasised that this gathering signals a milestone in the maturing of the city's young professional network, stating, "What they are looking at is Hong Kong's next generation."

The summit's agenda tackled critical themes shaping the new economy: artificial intelligence, geopolitics, education, capital markets, and life and health technology. In a pre-recorded video speech, Chief Executive Mr John Lee encouraged young professionals to seize the opportunities of the times, affirming that "the HKSAR Government will join hands with all sectors to build platforms for you to thrive in Hong Kong, in our country, and in the global arena." His message reinforced the government's commitment to fostering an environment where innovation and talent can flourish.

Discussions on artificial intelligence highlighted both the potential and challenges of widespread adoption. Panellists from Huawei, the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, and the Tech For Good Institute explored how small and medium-sized enterprises, NGOs, and schools can leverage AI effectively. The conversation also addressed risks, with Ms Ilaria Chan noting that AI can be misused to target vulnerable populations. Meanwhile, the education panel examined Hong Kong's role as an education hub, with speakers pointing to growing demand for the city's trilingual and culturally rich academic offerings.

Capital markets sessions delved into AI listings, asset tokenisation, and the evolving role of exchanges. Ms Bonnie Y Chan, CEO of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, reminded attendees that the fundamental function of capital markets is to match capital with opportunity. The life and health technology panel discussed how AI can strengthen Hong Kong's competitiveness in healthcare, balancing technological advancement with the irreplaceable human touch in patient care.

The summit also featured a dedicated start-up pitching session, where entrepreneurs presented ventures in biotech, health tech, and beyond to an audience of investors and industry leaders. Mr LU Chin Yung of Invest Hong Kong praised the city's safe environment, efficiency, and clean government as key advantages for founders. The event concluded with a commitment to continue building the summit as a platform for dialogue between young professionals and leaders in government and business.
