GRE Alpha Electronics has introduced the GCPD040-RF, a 40W constant current LED driver that measures just 78 x 40 x 29 mm—smaller than a standard business card—yet supports wireless programming via RFID or NFC. The launch matters because it addresses a persistent tension in architectural lighting: designers want smooth, flicker-free dimming even in fixtures where space is severely limited, and manufacturers want to reduce the number of stocked SKUs needed to cover varied fixture designs.
The driver can be configured without any cable or power connection. Using RFID with PC software, a single unit or an entire batch can be programmed on a pad, which speeds up production-line setup. Alternatively, NFC with a mobile app allows field configuration from a phone, with password-protected write access to prevent unauthorized changes. Through either method, users can set output current from 200 to 1400mA, along with minimum dim level, dimming curve and other parameters. That means one stocked driver can serve many different fixture designs, simplifying inventory and reducing lead-time pressure for lighting manufacturers.
Dimming flexibility is another key implication. The GCPD040-RF supports 0-10V or 1-10V dimming and offers wirelessly programmable minimum dimming presets—1%, 10%, or Dim-To-Off—as well as logarithmic or linear dimming types. It is flicker-free and compliant with IEEE 1789 when tested from 50% to 100% of maximum current. For commercial spaces such as offices, retail and hospitality, that level of control helps lighting designers tailor ambiance and energy use without swapping hardware.
Reliability features further strengthen the case for specifiers. The driver accepts a universal 120-277V AC input, delivers up to 40W of constant current output with a 20-43V DC range, reaches up to 87% efficiency, draws less than 0.5W on standby and is IP64 compliant. An NTC input for an external temperature sensor and multiple built-in protection features add to its suitability for demanding environments. The unit is UL Listed (Class P, Class 2), meets UL 8750 and CSA C22.2, is RoHS compliant and satisfies EU Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2020. GRE Alpha backs it with a 5-year warranty.
Target applications include space-constrained fixtures in commercial environments: recessed and adjustable downlights, accent and display track lighting, wall-mount sconces, wall-wash uplights, decorative and architectural pendants, and exterior wall-wash and facade lighting. By shrinking the driver while adding wireless programmability, GRE Alpha gives lighting professionals a way to standardize on fewer parts and adapt fixtures quickly—whether on the production line or in the field.
