The 43rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition has concluded, revealing a new wave of innovative timepieces that blend craftsmanship with avant-garde concepts. Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Limited, and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Limited, the competition serves as a platform to elevate design standards and foster creativity within the industry. This year's theme for the Open Group, 'Transcending Time,' encouraged designers to explore sensory experiences and translate them into abstract, time-defying forms, while the Student Group's theme, 'Contours of the Breeze,' focused on capturing the ethereal movement of wind.
The competition attracted 130 entries, with a judging panel comprising industry experts and celebrity guest judge Joey Thye. In the Open Group, the Champion title went to Chan Pak Hei and Yang Tianxu for their design 'Tectonic Indeterminacy,' sponsored by Golden Hawk Manufactory Ltd. Inspired by the organic geometry of pebbles, the watch features angular facets carved from a solid form, turning the dial into a tangible representation of time. The sculpted void integrates the crown seamlessly, elevating time reading to a spatial and tactile experience.
The First Runner-up, 'Channel' by Wong Ting Bong, sponsored by Youngs Watch Company Limited and Po Fai Precision Company Limited, incorporates a VU meter scale and pointer, commonly used in audio equipment, to visualize the abstract relationship between time and sound. The Second Runner-up, Pang Sze Ngaw's 'Moment of Stillness,' depicts mountain ranges outlined in gold wire with enamel rivers and peaks, and a relief swallow weaving through the landscape as a messenger of time.
In the Student Group, Yip Yuen Sze, Christine from the Hong Kong Design Institute claimed the Champion with 'Traces of Storm,' a design that mirrors cyclone patterns in satellite cloud images and features lightning bolt-shaped hands. This design also earned the Made-to-Sell Award, recognizing its commercial potential, and will be produced and launched through the HKTDC's Design Gallery. First Runner-up Tam Hei Yiu from Pope Paul VI College presented 'Running through the breeze,' where hour, minute, and second hands take the forms of a girl, a tree, and a windmill, respectively, symbolizing perseverance. Second Runner-up Lo Hoi Pui from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong crafted 'Carpe Diem,' drawing inspiration from dandelion seeds and incorporating a weathervane-themed central hand.
The competition is a cornerstone of the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and Salon de TIME, which together attracted over 17,000 trade buyers from 115 countries and regions. These events underscore Hong Kong's role as a global hub for watch and clock trade, and the competition's winning designs demonstrate the industry's commitment to pushing creative boundaries. As these emerging designers gain recognition, they inject fresh momentum into the market, promising a future where timepieces are not just instruments but expressions of art and innovation.
