HPRA Honors Gustavo Arellano as 2026 ¡BRAVO! Journalist of the Year

The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) has named Gustavo Arellano, award-winning columnist for the Los Angeles Times, as the recipient of its 2026 ¡BRAVO! Journalist of the Year Award. The announcement highlights a career defined by incisive reporting, cultural insight, and an unwavering commitment to stories that challenge conventional narratives and confront injustice. Arellano will be honored at the 12th annual HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards on November 19, 2026, at the Los Angeles River Center & Gardens, under the theme “Legacy in Motion.” The event marks HPRA’s return to Los Angeles, where the organization was founded in 1984, and celebrates individuals whose work shapes the communications industry and the communities it serves.

For HPRA, the award underscores the essential relationship between journalism and public relations, and the shared responsibility both fields carry in shaping public understanding. “Journalists and communications professionals have a symbiotic relationship, but our shared responsibility goes far beyond exchanging information or shaping a narrative,” said HPRA National President Sonia V. Diaz. “At our best, we serve the public by elevating truth, challenging misinformation and ensuring that the stories of those who have been ignored, misrepresented or denied a platform are heard.” The recognition of Arellano, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and two-time Pulitzer finalist, signals HPRA’s emphasis on supporting a strong, independent press at a time when credibility and public trust are paramount.

Arellano’s recent work exemplifies that commitment. In 2026, he was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in Opinion Writing for commentary examining families and communities affected by federal mass deportation policies in the Los Angeles area. That followed a 2025 finalist distinction for columns challenging assumptions about Latino political identity. He was also part of the Los Angeles Times team that won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting on leaked recordings that exposed racist remarks among Los Angeles civic leaders. “Gustavo has consistently challenged comfortable assumptions, confronted powerful institutions and brought humanity and historical context to stories that others might overlook,” Diaz said. “He reminds us that the power of our professions lies not simply in our ability to reach audiences, but in our responsibility to tell the truth, hold ourselves accountable and use our platforms to ensure that no community is rendered invisible.”

The son of Mexican immigrants and a lifelong Orange County resident, Arellano began his career at OC Weekly, where he spent 15 years as an investigative reporter and six as editor, and developed his nationally syndicated column ¡Ask a Mexican!, which used satire and history to confront stereotypes about Mexican and Mexican American identity. He is the author of three books, including Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America, and co-authored A People’s Guide to Orange County. Since joining the Los Angeles Times in 2018 and becoming a California columnist in 2020, he has examined immigrant families, anti-immigrant policies, Latino political participation, and regional history, resisting portrayals of Latino communities as a monolith.

The ¡BRAVO! Awards serve as HPRA’s primary fundraiser for its National Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance, mentorship, and professional development to aspiring communications professionals. Six scholarship recipients will be recognized at this year’s celebration, connecting current leaders with the next generation. Arellano joins previously announced honorees Etienne Hernandez-Medina, Snow Tha Product, and Jesus “Malverde” Gonzalez.
