Kavalan Distillery has earned the Whisky of the Year honor for the second consecutive year at the 2026 International Whisky Competition, solidifying its status as a premier global whisky producer. The competition, held at the Louisville Thoroughbred Society, awarded the prestigious Golden Barrel Trophy to Kavalan Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, which impressed judges with its depth, balance, and complexity. This follows Kavalan's 2025 win with the Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, which scored 97.04 points.
Max A. Solano, Competition Director of the International Whisky Competition, highlighted the rarity of Kavalan's achievement, stating, "Kavalan has accomplished a rare feat by winning Whisky of the Year two years in a row at one of the industry's most demanding blind tasting competitions." The winning whisky distinguished itself through a rigorous double-blind evaluation process, where judges had no information about origin, category, or alcohol by volume.
Tasting notes provided by Octavio "Tavo" Bernal, Master of Scotch, Council of Whiskey Masters, describe the whisky's complex profile: "The nose opens with oily leather, an earthy tea blend, and a hint of anise, followed by grilled mango, light ash, and a touch of white pepper. On the palate, chocolate-covered raisins, chewy figs, and a delicate smoky barbecue tang come forward. The finish lingers with dark leather, juicy cassis, and lightly roasted cocoa nibs."
Kavalan, based in Yilan County, Taiwan, continues to push the boundaries of whisky-making through innovative production techniques, unique climate conditions, and meticulous cask selection. The distillery's back-to-back wins underscore its ability to consistently produce world-class spirits that excel in blind tastings.
Complete results of the competition are available at www.whiskycompetition.com/results. Since its restructuring in 2015, the International Whisky Competition has become one of the most selective events in the whisky industry, with each entry evaluated individually through a strict double-blind process. The judging panel this year included Masters from the Council of Whiskey Masters, respected industry veterans, and professional tasters. Following an Olympic-style format, the competition awards only three medals per category—Gold, Silver, and Bronze—making each accolade highly sought after.
