The organizations have announced $400,000 in funding to support two promising early-career researchers, Dr. Jared Mayers of Fred Hutch Cancer Center and Dr. Jaime L. Schneider of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Each will receive $200,000 to pursue projects aimed at addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the field: early detection and overcoming treatment resistance.
The urgency of this investment is underscored by the disease's toll. Lung cancer claims a life in the United States every 4.2 minutes, yet competition for research funding remains fierce. Dr. Mayers' research focuses on the microbiome of the lungs, specifically the tiny populations of bacteria that may influence the development of lung cancer. Because these microbes are present in such small numbers, they have been difficult to study. Dr. Mayers is developing highly sensitive techniques to analyze these bacteria within lung tissue, with the goal of mapping their contribution to cancer. This work could uncover new ways to prevent the disease before it starts. Dr. Schneider's project aims to understand how lung cancer cells adapt and survive despite treatment. She is investigating how these cells manage their energy metabolism, identifying potential weak points that could be targeted to prevent resistance to existing therapies. This research is crucial for patients whose disease has become resistant to standard chemotherapy and targeted treatments, offering hope for longer-lasting and more effective options. Dr. Schneider was inspired by the "tremendous arsenal of new drugs" that were improving lives, and her work seeks to expand that arsenal by outsmarting cancer's escape routes.
The Early Career Researcher (ECR) grant program is designed to provide a launching pad for young scientists, enabling them to secure major independent research awards. The program has demonstrated a remarkable "multiplier effect," with every dollar invested generating an average of $13 in subsequent funding from other organizations. To date, LCFA has awarded 25 grants totaling $4.6 million, which has grown into more than $50 million in additional research funding. This track record means that Dr. Mayers and Dr. Schneider are not only receiving immediate support but also gaining the credibility needed to attract long-term investment in their work.
