LION E-Mobility AG (LION; ISIN: CH0560888270) announced that its subsidiary LION Smart Production GmbH has partnered with Castrol to develop a new battery module for high-performance EV applications, combining direct battery cooling with advanced thermal fluids. The partnership aims to enhance battery thermal management for passenger cars, trucks, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) worldwide.
Direct battery cooling involves submerging battery cells in a lightweight dielectric fluid, which Castrol ON EV Thermal Fluids will provide. This approach facilitates fast charging and discharging, superior heat dissipation, enhanced power density, and improved battery lifespan and safety, according to internal testing compared to conventional indirect cooling systems.
The new battery module features a modular design for homogeneous temperature distribution and minimal temperature gradient within the cell. The structure maximizes the active cooled contact surface, while a 'single cell fuse' reduces potential propagation from internal short circuits. These innovations enable the battery module to improve the efficiency of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) through higher energy recuperation, greater power at lower system cost, and increased operational safety.
