New Report Highlights 23 Major Desalination Projects Across Latin America

Vostock Capital has released a free report, “Desalination Projects Latin America,” providing an overview of 23 flagship desalination projects across Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. The analysis highlights initiatives that are shaping the future of water security and sustainability in the region.

Among the featured projects is the El Abra Mill Project in Chile, developed by Freeport-McMoRan and Codelco. With an investment of US $7.5 billion, the project includes a concentrator, a seawater desalination plant, and a desalinated water pumping system with a capacity of 500 liters per second. Another Chilean project is the Desalination Plant in the Coquimbo Region, led by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), with a US $350 million investment and a capacity of 1,200 l/s to supply potable water to Coquimbo and La Serena.

In Peru, the Tía María Copper Project by Southern Copper Corp involves a US $1.8 billion investment and features a 235 l/s seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant dedicated to mining processes. Mexico’s Los Cabos, Baja California Sur project is an US $85 million state-of-the-art desalination plant with a capacity of 250 l/s, designed to meet growing water demand sustainably. Brazil’s Ceará Seawater Desalination Plant, developed by Cagece for US $620 million, will supply potable water to over 720,000 people in Fortaleza, with a capacity of 1,000 l/s.

The report is part of a broader 2026 desalination agenda that includes two exclusive technical site visits in Spain. The first visit is to the AcuaMed Desalination Plant in Murcia on May 13–14, and the second to the ATL Desalination Plant in Llobregat on September 22–23. These visits offer professionals first-hand insight into operating facilities and advanced desalination techniques. The report underscores Latin America’s growing focus on desalination as a critical solution to water scarcity, driven by mining, municipal, and agricultural demands. The projects represent significant investments and technological advancements that could serve as models for other arid regions.
