NFID Survey Reveals 77% of US Adults Support Vaccines, Yet Only 48% Got Vaccinated as Uncertainty and Access Gaps Persist

A recent survey conducted by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) has found that while 77% of American adults support vaccines, there is widespread uncertainty about which specific vaccines they need. The annual survey, which focused on respiratory vaccines for influenza, RSV, pneumococcal disease, and Covid-19, highlights a critical gap between positive attitudes and actual vaccination behavior.

The results show that although 77% of respondents view vaccines positively, only 48% had received at least one of the four recommended respiratory vaccines in the past year. This low uptake means many Americans are missing out on the benefits of vaccination, including protection against severe illness, reduced hospitalizations, and lower risk of complications.

Speaking during the release of the findings, NFID Medical Director Robert Hopkins, Jr. emphasized the lost opportunity to protect families and loved ones when fewer people get vaccinated regularly. The survey suggests that healthcare professionals can play a key role in closing this gap: about 60% of respondents said they trust or have a lot of trust in healthcare professionals for health information. This trust presents an opportunity for the medical community to provide clear, consistent vaccine recommendations.

The survey also uncovered access barriers. 22% of participants reported challenges when seeking respiratory vaccines, such as vaccine shortages or long wait times at medical facilities. Addressing these barriers could significantly improve vaccine uptake and yield measurable public health benefits, including reducing the economic burden of infectious diseases.

As efforts to increase vaccination rates continue, parallel initiatives by companies like Co-Diagnostics Inc. (NASDAQ: CODX) to develop accessible and affordable testing kits for home and non-hospital settings could help diagnose respiratory diseases early and prevent progression to severe illness. Such innovations complement vaccination efforts by enabling timely detection and treatment.

The survey findings underscore the need for targeted public health messaging and improved access to vaccines. With most Americans supportive of vaccines but unclear about recommendations, healthcare providers and policymakers have a prime opportunity to bridge the knowledge gap and boost uptake. This could lead to healthier communities and reduced strain on the healthcare system.
