Olu of Warri and Queen Consort Launch 'Iam Itsekiri' to Unite Global Itsekiri Community

The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, and Queen Consort Olori Atuwatse III, Mama Iwere, have launched a new initiative called 'Iam Itsekiri' to unite Itsekiri people across the globe. This cultural identity movement and digital platform aims to foster a shared sense of belonging among Itsekiris at home and in the diaspora, as well as friends of the kingdom.

According to a press release, the initiative is being launched under the authority of the Palace of the Warri Kingdom. It will combine a media-driven cultural campaign with a dedicated mobile application, serving as a digital gathering place for community members. The app is expected to be available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store soon.

Speaking on the vision, His Majesty explained that the movement is built around the meaning of the name Itsekiri, which translates to 'blessing surrounds us.' The platform seeks to strengthen identity, pride, and unity among the people, while also extending that sense of belonging to friends and allies of the kingdom. 'To say I am Itsekiri is to make an active declaration that one belongs to a people that blessing follows,' he stated.

The initiative redefines Itsekiri identity beyond geography and population size, emphasizing that communities driven by a strong idea can grow into influential movements. It welcomes three groups: those born Itsekiri, those who became part of the family through marriage, and friends of Itsekiri who identify with the values and ideals of the people. This approach broadens participation while preserving cultural pride and heritage.

The Iam Itsekiri application functions as a digital village, providing users with updates from the Palace and the kingdom, connecting Itsekiris globally, and offering cultural content that promotes language, traditions, customs, and indigenous cuisine. The movement is also being amplified through the #IAmItsekiri Challenge, encouraging participants to share personal stories and experiences that reflect the Itsekiri identity.

His Majesty described the initiative as 'not nostalgia, but strategy,' aimed at preserving heritage, strengthening community bonds, and projecting the blessings and values of the Itsekiri people onto the global stage. This launch marks a significant step in leveraging technology to maintain cultural ties in an increasingly connected world.
