PNE Group Sells 250 MW Photovoltaic Project in South Africa, Reinforcing Renewable Energy Commitment

The PNE Group has sold another large photovoltaic project in South Africa, this time a 250 MW facility in the Free State province, to a major South African independent power producer. The transaction, announced by the Cuxhaven-based renewable energy developer, underscores PNE's growing footprint in a market it considers strategically important for its international expansion.

According to the announcement, PNE South Africa will continue to support the project's development through to Financial Close, providing project development services to the investor. This continued involvement allows PNE to contribute its expertise and ensure the project's successful realization, even after the sale.

Roland Stanze, COO of PNE AG, commented on the deal: “With the sale of this strategic, large scale PV project we are continuing our successful project development activities in South Africa. The transaction demonstrates that our local teams are able to develop attractive projects in international growth markets and successfully market them. At the same time, we remain involved in the project and contribute our expertise to its further development.” He added that the transaction “also underlines our ability to continuously realise value from our extensive project pipeline and to sell projects at the appropriate time.”

The sale is significant for several reasons. First, it demonstrates PNE's ability to execute on its project pipeline and generate value from its international operations. As of June 2026, the PNE Group's project pipeline in South Africa comprised around 2,000 MW of photovoltaic and around 2,800 MW of wind energy, highlighting the company's substantial commitment to the region. Second, the transaction contributes to South Africa's renewable energy capacity, supporting the country's efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The Free State province, where the project is located, is known for its high solar irradiation, making it an ideal location for large-scale PV development.

PNE's success in South Africa also signals the attractiveness of the country's renewable energy market to international investors and developers. The involvement of a major South African independent power producer as the buyer indicates growing local interest and capacity in the renewable energy sector. This aligns with broader trends in South Africa, where the government has been actively promoting renewable energy through various procurement programs.

The PNE Group, listed in the SDAX, has over 30 years of experience in project development, particularly in onshore and offshore wind farms, and has expanded into photovoltaic projects and battery storage solutions. Its role as a Clean Energy Solutions Provider covers the entire life cycle of renewable energy projects, from site investigation and permitting to construction, operation, and repowering. The sale of the 250 MW PV project not only reinforces PNE's position in South Africa but also contributes to the global transition to clean energy. As the company continues to develop its pipeline, further transactions and developments in the region are anticipated.
