Quantum BioPharma Advances Lucid-MS Phase 2 Trial with Thermo Fisher Agreement

Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) has entered into a Study Start-Up Agreement (SUA) with the clinical research business of Thermo Fisher Scientific to implement its Phase 2 clinical trial of Lucid-21-302 (Lucid-MS) for multiple sclerosis (MS). The agreement initiates formal study start-up activities following FDA clearance to proceed with the trial. Thermo Fisher will support study start-up and related clinical research services through its PPD Clinical Research Business. Quantum BioPharma said the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial will evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of Lucid-MS in people with progressive forms of MS using clinical and radiological endpoints.

The significance of this agreement lies in its potential to accelerate the development of a novel treatment for progressive forms of MS, which currently have limited therapeutic options. Lucid-MS is an investigational, first-in-class New Chemical Entity designed to provide neuroprotection by inhibiting demyelination through targeting protein arginine deiminase 2 (PAD2), an enzyme implicated in myelin degradation. By preventing and potentially reversing myelin damage, Lucid-MS could address the underlying mechanism of MS rather than just managing symptoms. This approach represents a promising shift in MS research, where existing therapies primarily modulate the immune system but do not directly promote myelin repair.

Partnering with Thermo Fisher's PPD Clinical Research Business brings substantial operational and scientific expertise to the trial. Thermo Fisher is a global leader in clinical research services, and its involvement lends credibility and resources that can help ensure the trial is executed efficiently and meets regulatory standards. For Quantum BioPharma, this agreement marks a critical step in advancing its lead compound from preclinical promise to clinical validation. The company's wholly owned subsidiary, Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., is focused on the research and development of Lucid-MS, which has shown in preclinical models to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of multiple sclerosis.

If the Phase 2 trial yields positive results, Lucid-MS could become a first-in-class therapy for progressive MS, a condition that affects a significant portion of the MS population and often leads to cumulative disability. The trial's use of both clinical and radiological endpoints will provide a comprehensive assessment of the drug's impact on disease progression and neurological function. Success in this trial would not only validate Quantum BioPharma's scientific approach but also potentially open doors for partnerships, funding, and further clinical development.

For investors, the SUA signals that Quantum BioPharma is moving forward with its clinical program after receiving FDA clearance, reducing regulatory uncertainty and demonstrating tangible progress. The company's broader pipeline includes assets for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse disorders, but Lucid-MS is its most advanced and closely watched candidate. The agreement with Thermo Fisher also highlights the company's ability to secure collaborations with top-tier service providers, which is essential for conducting large-scale clinical trials.
