Quantum BioPharma Cuts Q2 Expenses by 53%, Advances Lucid-MS to Phase 2 Trial

Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) reported a 53% year-over-year reduction in operating expenses for the second quarter of 2026, totaling $2.29 million, and a 47% decrease in general and administrative expenses to $1.76 million. The company's combined cash, cash equivalents, and digital assets stood at approximately $9.5 million as of June 30, up from $4.1 million at the end of 2025. Management indicated that this liquidity is sufficient to fund planned operations to at least October 2027, based on the first-half 2026 cash burn rate.

The cost reduction comes as the company advances its lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, into a Phase 2 clinical trial for progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Subsequent to the quarter-end, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Quantum's Investigational New Drug (IND) application, clearing the way for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in patients with progressive MS. This milestone is crucial for a condition with limited treatment options, especially in the progressive forms where myelin degradation leads to irreversible disability.

Lucid-MS is a patented new chemical entity that has shown in preclinical models to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of MS. The compound is being developed by Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Quantum. The Phase 2 trial will assess the drug's safety and efficacy, potentially offering a disease-modifying therapy that could alter the course of progressive MS.

Beyond MS, Quantum is building a portfolio targeting neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders and alcohol misuse. The company also retains a 19.84% stake in Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., which markets UNBUZZD, an over-the-counter supplement, and is entitled to royalty payments of 7% of sales until payments reach $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. This diversification provides additional potential revenue streams.

The financial discipline demonstrated in the second quarter is a positive signal for investors, as it extends the company's cash runway into late 2027, providing a buffer for the costly clinical trial phase. The FDA's green light for Lucid-MS is a significant de-risking event, moving the asset closer to potential commercialization. If the Phase 2 trial succeeds, Lucid-MS could address a substantial unmet medical need in progressive MS, a market projected to grow as the population ages.

Quantum's management remains focused on operational efficiency and advancing its pipeline. The company's ability to lower expenses while progressing its lead asset suggests a strategic approach to creating shareholder value. The upcoming trial results will be pivotal in determining the drug's future and the company's trajectory.
