Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) was featured on the latest episode of The BioMedWire Podcast, where co-founder and executive co-chair Anthony Durkacz discussed the company's lead drug candidate, Lucid-MS, and its commercial alcohol metabolism product, unbuzzd(TM). The company is focused on advancing innovative therapies for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders, as well as alcohol misuse.
Durkacz emphasized that Lucid-MS is being developed to address mobility loss associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) by targeting nerve damage, an area he believes remains unmet by currently available treatments. The drug candidate is a patented new chemical entity shown to prevent and reverse myelin degradation, the underlying mechanism of MS, in preclinical models. Quantum BioPharma is preparing for its upcoming Phase 2 clinical trial for Lucid-MS, which will be the first study to evaluate the drug candidate in MS patients following Phase 1 testing in healthy volunteers. This milestone is crucial for the company as it moves closer to potentially offering a novel therapy for MS patients suffering from mobility impairment.
In addition to its pipeline, Quantum BioPharma highlighted unbuzzd(TM), a commercial product designed to accelerate blood alcohol metabolism and currently available in the U.S. market. The company invented unbuzzd and spun out its over-the-counter version to Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., led by industry veterans. Quantum retains a 19.84% ownership stake in Unbuzzd (as of March 31, 2026) and is entitled to royalty payments of 7% of sales from unbuzzd until payments total $250 million, after which the royalty drops to 3% in perpetuity. This arrangement provides a recurring revenue stream that supports the company's broader research and development efforts.
The podcast appearance underscores Quantum BioPharma's dual strategy of advancing a high-potential drug candidate while monetizing a commercial product. The Phase 2 trial for Lucid-MS represents a significant catalyst, as positive results could validate its mechanism of action and open a substantial market opportunity in MS treatment. Meanwhile, unbuzzd's growing presence in the U.S. market offers immediate revenue potential and reduces reliance on future clinical successes.
