SADC Webinar to Address How Education, Energy and AI Can Transform Sierra Leone's Youth

On October 15, SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect (SADC) will host a free 90-minute webinar titled "Education & Digitalization: The Engine of Personal Growth and National Transformation," addressing critical questions about the future of young Africans like Aminata, a fictional 17-year-old from Falaba District who studies by phone light and wonders if online opportunities are within her reach. The session, part of SADC's Global Webinar Series, underscores the urgency of equipping Sierra Leone's youth with skills and infrastructure to participate in the digital economy. By focusing on education, energy, and artificial intelligence, the discussion highlights both the promise and the pitfalls of technological adoption in a country where intermittent power and limited resources remain daily realities.

Moderator Golda Fania Kamara, who implemented Sierra Leone's first National Health Information Hub, will lead a panel of four experts: accountant and nonprofit leader Bamikole Roberts; international education specialist Sajdah Ali; cybersecurity professional and entrepreneur James Kamara; and clean-energy entrepreneur Mariama Kamara, co-founder of the African-language AI venture SanKam. Topics will range from teaching students with unreliable electricity to the risks of rogue AI agents as the country begins to embrace AI. Kamara emphasized that technology alone does not transform societies: "People do. Skills, institutions, trust and opportunity do. The goal isn't to build for Sierra Leone. It's to build with Sierra Leoneans." That philosophy is central to the webinar's importance—it argues that sustainable development must be locally led and context-aware, not imposed from outside.

For those interested, Register by visiting sierrafricanetwork.com/events, completing the SADC interest form, then finishing registration on Zoom. Both steps are required. The session follows September 24's "Culture as a Connector" and precedes upcoming webinars on agriculture, health and foodways (November 5), homecoming with purpose (November 19), and investing in Sierra Leone (December 10). The series builds toward SADC's 10-Day Heritage & Legacy Tour, March 7–16, 2027, which includes visits to Bunce and Tasso Islands, Bo District, Mozza Beach, and a historical immersion in the inaugural Freedom Day commemoration. Limited to 30 travelers at $2,500 per person (double occupancy), the tour includes a legacy gift to support the 5,500 residents of historic Tasso Island. This year, SADC partnered with LifeStraw to provide water purifiers in the five schools on Tasso Island, demonstrating how diaspora-led initiatives can deliver tangible improvements in health and education.

The webinar's implications extend beyond Sierra Leone. As AI and digital tools reshape economies worldwide, the panel's insights will resonate with other developing nations facing similar challenges: how to harness technology for inclusive growth while mitigating risks like cyber threats and job displacement. By centering the voices of Sierra Leonean professionals and entrepreneurs, SADC models a collaborative approach that could inform policy and investment strategies across the African diaspora. The conversation also highlights the role of energy access in enabling digital learning—a prerequisite for any meaningful digitalization effort. As Aminata's question echoes across the continent, the webinar offers a platform to explore concrete pathways for turning curiosity into opportunity, ensuring that young people are not mere spectators but active participants in their nation's transformation.
