SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect has announced its 10-day Heritage & Legacy Tour to Sierra Leone, scheduled for April 22 to May 1, 2026. The tour, limited to 30 participants, aims to bridge the African Diaspora with Sierra Leonean roots through a combination of cultural experiences, business networking, and community development.
Participants will engage in a business expo at Fourah Bay College, connecting entrepreneurs with local innovators and leaders. This aligns with Sierra Leone's national tourism strategy, as Minister of Tourism Nabeela Tunis declared 2025 the "Year of Ecotourism." The expo encourages investment in agriculture, technology, tourism, and cultural industries, echoing the agricultural expertise of ancestors who brought rice cultivation to America.
A key component is the fundraiser for Tasso Island, home to over 5,500 residents. Contributions will support clean water, solar power, sanitation, education, and internet connectivity. The tour also includes a dedication ceremony for artifacts to be installed at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park in Hilton Head, South Carolina, symbolizing a spiritual homecoming for the African American community. These events will be captured in the documentary Bridging Freedom, exploring the cultural continuum between Sierra Leone and the Gullah Geechee corridor.
Participants will join Sierra Leone's 65th Independence Day celebration on April 27, experiencing vibrant culture and traditions resonant with Gullah Geechee communities. The tour also includes visits to the ruins of Bunce Island and Mozza Beach for reflection.
Executive Director Marva Goldsmith stated, "This is a historic journey of heritage, entrepreneurship, and renewal—where Gullah Geechee legacy meets Sierra Leone's living history." A $300 tax-deductible deposit secures a spot and supports Tasso Island projects. Full itinerary and registration are available at www.sierrafricanetwork.com.
